Argentine Spanish vs Uruguayan Spanish

Spanish is one and it’s many, you know it by now, right? Even when we try to group Argentina and Uruguay under the term ‘Español Rioplatense‘, truth be told there are differences between one country and the other across the river.

My sister in law is married to a Uruguayan, and whenever we meet I have the chance to grasp small differences in the Spanish we speak. They are subtle, though. Compared to Spanish from any other country, these are very very specific and only relevant if you are curious.

When John, an American who moved to live in Montevideo first contacted me for classes he laughed about the fact that in Uruguay you can hold a conversation with only ‘Ta’.

Here is a helpful list for anyone exploring the subject:

Argentina vs Uruguay

Where we say…In URUGUAY they say
CheBo
OkeyTa
QuilomboRelajo
MuchoPila
ChicosGurises
ListoPronto
PiletaPiscina
Con vosContigo
FacturasBizcochos
InodoroWater
ZapatillasChampiones
BrochesPalillos
BatataBoniato
Está buenísimoEstá demás
ColectivoÓmnibus
ArosCaravanas
CorpiñoSoutien
PavaCaldera
PerfectoImpecable
Cerrar (Trabar)Trancar

Paying attention to these contrasts is sometimes fun even for a native.
