Spanish words that are different in Argentina | VERBS

You might be surprised by the number of words that we use on a daily basis in Argentina and would make other Spanish native speakers stare at us in astonishment.

These words spread through very diverse fields, from food to transport, from clothes to places in town. In this post I’ll try to give you a primer on the verbs you’ll only hear if you speak to an Argentinian or visit Argentina. But don’t miss my other posts on ADJECTIVES and NOUNS.

The first Spanish verb in the list is the choice in Peninsular Spanish, while the second is ours.

  • TO DRIVE | conducir – manejar
  • TO PARK | aparcar – estacionar
  • TO DRINK | beber – tomar
  • TO USE | utilizar – usar
  • TO FINISH | acabar – terminar
  • TO RETURN | regresar – volver
  • TO CHOOSE | escoger – elegir
  • TO TAKE PICTURES | tomar fotos – sacar fotos
  • TO SEND | enviar – mandar
  • TO TAKE | coger – tomar/agarrar
  • TO ARRANGE | combinar – arreglar
  • TO TAKE OFF | quitarse – sacarse
  • TO THROW | arrojar – tirar
  • TO REPAIR | reparar – arreglar
  • TO LISTEN | oir – escuchar
  • TO GET CLOSER | aproximarse – acercarse
  • TO CONTINUE | continuar – seguir
  • TO CELEBRATE | celebrar – festejar
  • TO RENT | arrendar – alquilar
  • TO TALK | conversar – charlar
  • TO DELAY | demorarse – tardarse

So, there you have it. As you have seen, there are more than a few Spanish verbs that are different in Argentina.
