Careta is a word we use in ingenious ways quite frequently. Although it translates as mask, there’s only one of such uses that is related literally with that meaning.

Ser CARETA
When we describe someone as being careta, it means they’re inauthentic, contradictory.
- Algunas personas son muy caretas. Toman alcohol y fuman tabaco a lo loco, pero dicen que la marihuana es una droga.
- La sociedad agentina de principios de siglo XX era muy careta.
Estar CARETA
In Argentinian slang, if you say “Estoy careta” it means you haven’t taken any drugs or drunk any alcohol.
Dejar CARETA a alguien
This one means to be left surprised
- Me dejó re careta la noticia de que rajaron a Gustavo.
