Canchero is a big word in Argentina. Everyone finds opportunities to use it.

It’s interesting that, depending on the context, it can be understood positively as ‘cool’ or negatively as ‘showing off’.

Also, you can describe someone as canchero/a based on their looks (outfit, hairstyle, tattoos) or attitude.

  • ¡Qué canchera esa campera!
  • Muy canchero tu corte de pelo.
  • Muy cancheras tus zapas, me encantan.
  • Esos lentes de sol son muy cancheros.

Now, look at this other example:

  • Los argentinos siempre nos hacemos los cancheros.

In this example above, I used the phrase hacerse el canchero, but I could have said:

  • Los argentinos siempre estamos canchereando.
  • Los argentinos siempre canchereamos

Cancherear could be translated as to act cool, and most of the time it’s used with a negative connotation.

If someone is acting overly confident, we usually say:

  • Concentrate, no cancherees.

There are many shades of canchero. Listen carefully and take this as a starting point.
